A long walk.

9:37AM, May 13, 2007 - [ Permalink]

This image is actually made up of two photos; the first metered off the Sun and the second off the darkest part of the building, which is now in use by the Federal Government. Those of you on my Twitter list know that after a lovely day of working in Motion over at Patty Bolands, I came home and decided to go for a bit of a walk with my camera, as Tracey was off to a jewelry event with her friends.

Well, it turned into a rather long walk (although not remotely as long as either of those).

I liked how the blue of the water looked behind the sign. The route was pretty straight forward; from my place to Borderleau park, across the Minto Bridges to Maple Island - to finally find out what the monument there was about - as thanks from the people of Hungary who fled to Canada in after the 1956 revolution.
I then got onto the Rideau River recreational pathway (at least, that is what I think it is called) through New Edinburgh Park, then Vanier Park, around some construction near the intersection of Montreal and North River Road, then into Riverain Park, under the Queensway, into Rideau River Park, passing under the Main Street Bridge, across Bank Street (where I considered a short side trip to Dairy Queen, but decided against, under the Bronson Ave bridge, into Vincent Massey Park, under the O-Train railroad bridge.

Somewhere in Vincent Massey Park, I think. Here the path began its slow climb upwards, hugging the Rideau River, under the Heron Road bridge, and into Hog's Back Park. Pretty much the entire time I was walking, I was taking photos of whatever caught my eye, occasionally regretting not having brought my longer lens. Apparently, 112 things caught my eye until the camera's battery conked out at Hog's Back Falls, much to my disappointment.

Hog's Back Falls at sunset.I followed the path which led under and the beside Hog's Back Road, over the Rideau River to Colonel By Drive, and to the recreational path on the East side of the Rideau Canal, passing the two sets of locks, past the Carleton University campus, alongside Dow's Lake, under Bronson Street, to the attractively-lit Bank Street bridge, past the Pretoria Bridge (which was closed for repairs for the weekend), under the Queensway, and on to the corner of Rideau Street and Sussex/Colonel By where I called Tracey to see where she was - at the Aulde Dubliner, just over a block away, where I joined her and finished the other half of her pint of Mangner's Apple Cider before continuing on to Loeb, and then home. -whew-

I was pleased to note that once I entered my route into the Gmaps Pedometer, I found out that I had walked 22.7 KM (just over a half-marathon), burned 1900+ calories completely justifying the slice of pepperoni pizza and ice cream I had when I got home.
