Preview sorting photos (or images) out of order?

12:02PM, October 28, 2006 - [ Permalink]

Quick and easy fix Preview.app's mis-sorting of photos or imagesI have to admit it - I've never really connected with Apple's iPhoto application. I'm not really sure why - it is slick, fast and easy. I suppose I'm just odd.

Fortunately for me, Apple's Mac OS X is blessed with a few ways of doing things, so what I use is Image Capture to get all the photos from the cameras, import them, and then open them in Preview.app.

However, for some time now (at least 10.4.6, I think), when you open a large number of photos (I usually open *all* the photos I took at once) in Preview, they appear maddeningly out of order.

I did the usual deleting of plist files to see if perhaps it was a setting or something.

The solution is piece-of-cake easy:

Once the photos have opened, Control-Click (or Right-click for you two (or more) buttoned mouse users) one of the image thumbnails, and a small drop down list will appear, containing a list: Sort By: name, path, date, size, kind, or keyword. Name should already be selected, so just select name again and they will reorder themselves.
