Witches Gathering 2006
Wednesday
Nov 1, 2006
Saturday night was the 2006 edition of the Witches Gathering, which Tracey and I have been attending, since the first one. Once again, we were asked to judge (or is it pass judgement?) the costumes.
As usual, we hum and haw for a long time about our costume choice, trying to decide what/who to be for Halloween.
Due to the hair, Tracey thought I might be able to do Dr. Gaius Baltar of Battlestar Galactica, and Tracey could be Number 6. But, I’d have to wear a suit & tie, loose, say, 15 kilos… And Tracey would have to get *taller*. So that was ixnayed – I hate wearing suits.
There were a few other possibilities tossed around when we finally settled on trying to be Goths. I was dubious. I’d have to wear *makeup* (shudder). Tracey (of course) did my hair, adding gel and hairspray, then changing the colour with some black and purple spray. She then put on the make up, paling my skin, doing strange-feeling stuff to my eyes and lips.. Ugh! Makeup!
However, the make up and hair looked great. We both decided that the black shirt I was going to wear wasn’t going to work (too shiny), so I went into the closet to see what I could find. Tracey and I arrived at the same idea at the same time – I’d grab my most-Hawaiian shirt and wear that – and poof, suddenly, I’m a tourist-goth.
Tracey was pretty much already made up by this point, but she certainly made a beautiful garnet-goth – which leaves me pondering the longer term implications of that. Goth *is* fun, but geez, the effort…
Every year, I get excited about judging beforehand, then get stressed while looking for “costumes of interest” and while being on stage, and then relief when we’re officially done judging. This year’s theme was Mythical Creatures.
From the moment when we walk into Barrymores we’re looking for good costumes to fit into the eight categories we had : Best Couple or Group, Funniest, Sexiest Female & Male, Best Theme Costume, Best Male & Female, as well as Judges Favorite, which was determined on stage. Which involves wandering around the dance floor, and walking up and down the stairs to see as many people as possible on the various levels there.
And if you need some costume ideas, here are some of the fun costumes; a borg, a Fraggle Rock (!)character, a woman dressed up as a man dressing up as a drag queen, a home-made Xena costume (impressive), two Jedi’s [not so subtle 35th birthday hint: Star Wars Force FX Lightsabers - Obi Wan or Mace Windu's are cool!], Marvin the Martian, a virgin bride (mythical creatures indeed!), a Queen of Hearts, two characters from the Zelda video game, and enough faeries and elves you couldn’t go too far without tripping over one.
The format of the evening changed a little bit – with no live band – DJ only, but it seemed to work really well with the crowd, who just wanted to dance, so I hope they keep that up. We didn’t get home until quite late, probably two or so. And yes, we did stop in at Pattys on the way home. I freaked out one of the waitresses who knows me.. That was fun.
As usual, it was a great party. Thanks Michelle and gang for putting it on.
